Leaving Employer Coverage

Leaving Employer Coverage

Your Employer Coverage
Is Ending.
Here’s Your Plan.

Whether you’re retiring, getting laid off, or your company is dropping your plan, the transition from employer coverage to Medicare has specific timelines and rules. We make sure every piece of your coverage is locked in before the old plan ends.

Get Started

The Transition Timeline

When employer coverage ends, you typically get a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) to sign up for Medicare Part B without a late penalty. But the clock starts ticking the day your coverage ends, and you usually have just 8 months to act.

During this window, you’ll need to make decisions about Part B, Part D (drug coverage), and whether to go with a Medigap supplement or a Medicare Advantage plan. If your spouse is also on your employer plan, their coverage transition needs to be coordinated at the same time.

The biggest mistake we see: People assume their employer’s HR department will handle the Medicare transition for them. They won’t. HR can tell you when your coverage ends. They can’t tell you which Medicare plan is right for you, which of your doctors accept which plans, or whether your medications are covered. That’s what we do.

What We Cover in Your Meeting

  • Employer plan vs. Medicare comparison: We lay both options side by side so you can see the real costs, not just the premiums.
  • COBRA vs. Medicare: COBRA keeps your employer plan temporarily, but it’s usually expensive and doesn’t count as “employer coverage” for Medicare penalty purposes. We help you weigh the tradeoffs.
  • HSA coordination: If you have a Health Savings Account, enrolling in Medicare affects your ability to contribute. We make sure you don’t trigger tax issues.
  • Spousal coverage: If your spouse was on your employer plan too, their transition needs to happen at the same time. We coordinate both.
  • Prescription drug coverage: We run your medications through every Part D formulary in your area so there are no surprises when you fill your first prescription on the new plan.

Your First Meeting Starts Here

Every meeting begins with: “What would you like to accomplish today?” Then we pull up every option available in your ZIP code, load in your doctors and medications, and shop together on screen. You see everything we see. You choose what works for your life. We handle the rest.
